Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of drug abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which has to be resolved for these cultures to survive. While the causes may vary from individual to person, the majority of of the factors for the significantly higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents appear to have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the U.S.. The most obvious hurdles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural ones and language.
