Native Americans and Alaska Natives have considerably higher rates of substance abuse and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which must be aknowledged for these cultures to survive. While the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from individual to individual, most of the factors for the higher rates of substance abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most apparent barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse are cultural challenges and language. This is why it is crucial that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Upper Kalskag obtain substance abuse treatment in an alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility that is understanding of their culture, and more importantly in a drug rehab that understand the need to offer alcohol and drug treatment in their native tongue.
