DUI/DWI offenders in Towanda are occasionally given the opportunity to participate in an alcohol and drug treatment program in lieu of penalties for their drug or alcohol related criminal offenses. The consequences for these types of offenses can occasionally be very severe, and may include jail time and significant fines and other significant costs associated with being prosecuted and/or found guilty of DUI/DWI. More often than not, particularly for initial offenders, the judge will decide that treating the problems of alcohol and drug abuse in drug rehab is going to be more effective in the long run for effectively addressing the problem. For DUI/DWI offenders in Towanda who are lucky enough to be allowed to take part in this rehab process instead of other far more extreme punishment, most will remain away from the criminal justice system permanently.
