Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of substance abuse and addiction than other races, an an issue which has to be resolved for these cultures to survive. While the reasons may vary from person to person, the majority of of the causes for the high rates of substance abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture.
