Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have considerably higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse and drug addiction than other races, an a situation which must be addressed for these people to survive. Although the causes may differ from person to individual, most of the factors for the significantly higher rates of drug abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents appear to have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the nation. The most apparent barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug addiction are cultural differences and language. For this reason it is crucial that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Red River, New Mexico receive treatment services in a drug and alcohol treatment facility that is understanding of their culture, and more importantly in one that takes into the account the need to offer alcohol and drug rehab in their language.
