Native Americans and Alaska Natives have considerably higher rates of abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which has to be aknowledged for these cultures to survive. Although the causes may differ from person to individual, many of the causes for the significantly higher rates of substance abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the country. The most evident barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse are cultural ones and language. This is why it is vital that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Prudhoe Bay receive rehab treatment in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center that is culturally acceptable, but more importantly in one that takes into the account the need to provide drug and alcohol treatment in their native tongue.
