Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, an an issue which has to be aknowledged for these cultures to survive. Although the causes may differ from person to person, most of the causes for the higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the country. The most evident barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural challenges and their language. Due to this it is crucial that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Pine Ridge, South Dakota receive substance abuse treatment in a drug rehabilitation facility that is culturally acceptable, and most importantly in a drug rehab program that understand the need to supply alcohol and drug treatment in their language.
