Native Americans and Alaska Natives have considerably higher rates of drug abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, an an issue which must be resolved for these cultures to survive. While the reasons may vary from person to person, many of the reasons for the significantly higher rates of abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most obvious obstacles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural challenges and their language.
