Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have significantly higher rates of substance abuse and drug addiction than other races, an a circumstance which must be aknowledged for these people to survive. While the causes may vary from person to individual, many of the causes for the higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents appear to have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the nation. The most apparent obstacles to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural ones and their language. For this reason it is crucial that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Newkirk, New Mexico receive substance abuse treatment in a drug treatment center that is culturally acceptable, and most importantly in one that takes into the account the need to provide drug and alcohol rehabilitation in their native tongue.
