Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have significantly higher rates of abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, an a circumstance which should be addressed for these cultures to endure. Although the things which trigger substance abuse may differ from individual to individual, many of the causes for the high rates of alcohol and drug abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the U.S.. The most obvious barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug addiction are cultural challenges and language.
