Although the causes may differ from person to person, most of the causes for the significantly higher rates of substance abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the U.S.. The most evident barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural ones and their language.
