Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of drug abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other races, an an issue which must be aknowledged for these people to survive. While the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from person to person, most of the reasons for the high rates of alcohol and drug abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most apparent barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug addiction are cultural ones and language. Due to this it is crucial that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Leonard receive substance abuse treatment in an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program that is culturally acceptable, and more importantly in a drug rehab program that understand the need to supply alcohol and drug treatment in their language.
