Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much increased rates of drug abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, an a circumstance which should be aknowledged for these people to survive. While the causes may vary from person to individual, the majority of of the factors for the high rates of abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most obvious obstacles to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse are cultural ones and their language.
