Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have significantly higher rates of substance abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an an issue which must be addressed for these cultures to survive. Although the reasons may vary from person to individual, the majority of of the causes for the high rates of abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the U.S.. The most obvious barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse are cultural ones and their language. For this reason it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Jal, New Mexico obtain substance abuse treatment in a drug and alcohol rehab center that is culturally acceptable, but most importantly in one that understand the need to offer drug rehabilitation in their language.
