Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which must be addressed for these cultures to survive. Although the causes may differ from individual to individual, most of the causes for the higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the U.S.. The most obvious barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural ones and language. For this reason it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Hualapai, Arizona receive treatment services in an alcohol and drug rehab program that is culturally acceptable, but more importantly in a drug rehab that takes into the account the need to provide alcohol and drug rehabilitation in their native tongue.
