House, New Mexico - Native Language Assistance
Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which must be aknowledged for these cultures to endure. Although the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from person to individual, most of the causes for the significantly higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most obvious hurdles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural differences and their language. This is why it is vital that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in House receive treatment services in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program that is culturally acceptable, but more importantly in a drug rehab program that considers the need to provide alcohol and drug treatment in their native tongue.
