Native Americans and Alaska Natives have considerably higher rates of substance abuse and drug addiction than other races, an a situation which has to be addressed for these cultures to survive. While the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from individual to person, most of the factors for the higher rates of abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth appear to have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the U.S.. The most obvious hurdles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural ones and their language. Due to this it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Gateway receive substance abuse treatment in an alcohol and drug rehab facility that is culturally acceptable, but most importantly in a drug rehab program that understand the need to offer alcohol and drug rehab in their language.
