Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much very high rates of abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other races, an a circumstance which has to be addressed for these people to survive. While the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from person to person, many of the causes for the high rates of abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents appear to have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the nation. The most apparent barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for addiction are cultural differences and language. For this reason it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Elim receive substance abuse treatment in a drug treatment program that is culturally acceptable, but more importantly in a drug rehab program that considers the need to supply drug and alcohol rehab in their language.
