Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which must be aknowledged for these cultures to survive. Although the causes may differ from individual to individual, most of the reasons for the high rates of substance abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most apparent hurdles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for addiction are cultural challenges and language.
