DUI/DWI offenders in Cuba are often given the opportunity to take part in an alcohol and drug rehab center as opposed to receiving other penalties for their drug or alcohol related offenses. Penalties for these kinds of crimes can occasionally be quite serious, including being locked up in jail and substantial fines and other significant costs to pay for being in court for and/or found guilty of DUI/DWI. Many times, especially for initial offenders, the criminal justice system will decide that addressing the problems of alcohol and drug abuse in drug or alcohol rehab is will prove more effective in the long run for effectively addressing the problem. For DUI/DWI offenders in Cuba who are lucky enough to be permitted to participate in such treatment in lieu of other far more serious penalties, many will remain out of the criminal justice system permanently.
