Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have significantly increased rates of alcohol and drug abuse and addiction than other races, an a circumstance which should be resolved for these cultures to survive. While the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from person to person, many of the reasons for the high rates of abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native youth appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the country. The most apparent barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse are cultural challenges and their language. This is why it is vital that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Cochise, Arizona receive substance abuse treatment in an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program that is culturally acceptable, but more importantly in a drug rehab that considers the need to supply drug rehabilitation in their language.
