Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much very high rates of abuse and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which has to be addressed for these people to survive. While the causes may differ from person to person, most of the causes for the higher rates of substance abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the nation. The most evident barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse are cultural challenges and their language. For this reason it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Chefornak, Alaska receive treatment services in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program that is understanding of their culture, and more importantly in one that takes into the account the need to provide drug rehab in their language.
