Native Americans and Alaska Natives have considerably very high rates of substance abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an a circumstance which has to be aknowledged for these cultures to survive. Although the causes may differ from person to individual, most of the factors for the higher rates of drug abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native youth appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the nation. The most evident barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for addiction are cultural differences and language. Due to this it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Central obtain substance abuse treatment in a drug rehabilitation center that is culturally acceptable, and more importantly in one that understand the need to provide drug rehabilitation in their native tongue.
