Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have significantly increased rates of abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other races, an a circumstance which must be resolved for these cultures to survive. Although the things which trigger substance abuse may differ from individual to individual, most of the reasons for the significantly higher rates of substance abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the U.S.. The most apparent obstacles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for addiction are cultural challenges and language.
