Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have considerably increased rates of substance abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an an issue which should be resolved for these cultures to endure. Although the causes may differ from individual to individual, many of the causes for the high rates of abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most evident barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for addiction are cultural differences and their language.
