Native Americans and Alaska Natives have considerably higher rates of abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an a situation which must be resolved for these people to endure. Although the things which trigger substance abuse may differ from individual to individual, many of the causes for the high rates of drug abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the U.S.. The most evident hurdles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug addiction are cultural ones and their language.
