Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have considerably higher rates of drug abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other races, an an issue which must be resolved for these cultures to survive. Although the things which trigger substance abuse may differ from individual to individual, most of the causes for the high rates of abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. The most obvious barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for addiction are cultural ones and their language.
